Community Capacity Building Programme

Name of Project: Community Capacity Building Programme
Lead Partner: Londonderry YMCA
Grant Awarded: £490,172

Building on successful delivery models under Phase I, the Community Capacity Building Programme (CCB) builds and develops the capacity and confidence of disengaged and marginalised groups to increase their confidence to participate in peace and reconciliation activities in order to achieve a shared sense of belonging.

CCB is a cross-community and cross-border programme which also recognises that single identity work is an important first step to building confidence and the capacity to address sectarianism and racism, supporting engagement and collaboration on a cross-community and cross border basis. With this in mind, the first phase engaged 28 groups (7 from each Council area) to undertake training in developing their skills so that they could extend their influence into the wider community. Key areas, such as Developing Good Relations Policies, Procedures and Action Plans, Forming Committees, Finance and Fundraising, Strategic Planning, Leadership Training and Networking will further develop and assist organisations in building their capacity as active organisations within their communities, giving them the tools to sustain themselves into the future. A resource allocation budget has enabled these participating groups to transfer their learning into good relations initiatives.

In order to encourage cross-community and cross border engagement the second phase of the programme has involved pairing groups from each Council area on a cross-community basis. Paired groups are working across previous barriers to develop and deliver joint projects using a resource allocation budget that will benefit their communities and promote positive relations at a grass roots level.

A total of 56 organisations and almost 400 participants have engaged with CCB to date and some examples of the initiatives that are being supported include-:

  • Lisnagelvin and Top of the Hill Women’s Groups Shared Political History Tour
  • Clooney Soccer Schools Football Socialisation Tournament
