Omagh District Council- Culture, Arts and Sports Programme

Name of Project: Culture, Arts and Sports Programme
Lead Partner: Omagh District Council
Grant Awarded: £165,011

This programme was a multi-faceted initiative that has focused on the use of shared spaces as a means of developing understanding, acceptance and trust through the celebration of culture, arts, sports and identity, in the Omagh District Council Area.

The main focus throughout the programme has been looking at how sport can be used to break down barriers and promote understanding of the issues surrounding sectarianism and racism. Activities have included a Multi Sports Coaching Programme with 28 schools receiving coaching in a range of sports including Gaelic, rugby and hockey, giving participants the opportunity to avail of coaching in sports which they may not have traditionally played. In addition, there have been collaborative programmes between Omagh, Strabane, Derry, Donegal and Sligo, with 60 schools across these regions participating in a range of Good Relations Educational programmes and local, regional and cross-border Sports Days and Jamborees.

Strule Arts Centre in Omagh played host to a Community Showcase Event, which brought together 32 community groups from throughout the district, who took to the stage to perform under the theme of ‘Our Shared Future’. As well as showcasing their communities, participants undertook good relations training and a residential, which provided them with the opportunity to build relationships and share their cultural identities with each other.

The Programme also enhanced Omagh District Council’s already extensive portfolio of carnival and parades including St Patrick’s Day and the Midsummer Carnival, encouraging wider participation and inclusivity from all of the community and embracing the broad cultural and ethnic traditions that exist within the district and beyond.

The Legacy Celebration Events Programme is a project supported by the European Union's PEACE III Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by the North West PEACE III Partnership of Derry City Council, Omagh District Council, and Strabane District Council.
