Name of Project: Culture, Arts and Sports Programme
Lead Partner: Strabane District Council
Grant Awarded: £164,778
The promotion of the shared use of spaces and the celebration of culture in the Strabane District Council area has been achieved through this wide-ranging programme, delivered through inter cultural, multi cultural, cross community and cross border activities.
The innovative Poetry Mapping project engaged with over 90 participants including primary school children, young people, older people and representatives from ethnic minority communities from across the District. A poetry map of contested spaces has been created within participants’ individual communities, which has been published as a collection of poems. Through a series of facilitated creative writing workshops participants had the opportunity to explore and interpret contested spaces, local histories and memories, as well as express their hopes and fears for the future. The publication was beautifully complimented by full-coloured illustrations created by a local artist.
The Musical Heritage programme is working towards promoting Strabane Town Centre and Castlederg as shared and neutral spaces, through engaging the wider community in a series of 8 facilitated musical workshops and a shared tunes workshop, a workshop on traditional dance and band costumes, and through the creation of a musical piece which will be performed at various events throughout the District.
Peace Building through Sport has created opportunities for schools and community groups to engage in other traditional sports which they might not otherwise have tried, therefore encouraging a change in perceptions and attitudes. Cultural diversity workshops and a broad programme of sporting activity have also been delivered which includes GAA, Soccer, Rugby and Hockey enabling young people to explore their own, and others’, cultural beliefs and traditions. A collaborative element across the Council areas of Derry City, Omagh, Strabane, Donegal and Sligo has created a NW Coaching Network, which is delivering a range of training opportunities including Equality Training, Child Protection, Disability Awareness and Good Relations Training. The project promotes inclusion, diversity, integration and the development and use of shared spaces on a cross-community, cross-border and multi-cultural basis.
The Legacy Celebration Events Programme is a project supported by the European Union's PEACE III Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by the North West PEACE III Partnership of Derry City Council, Omagh District Council, and Strabane District Council.
